Universidad de Viña de Mar UVM-Chile offered excellent opportunities to see the geography and experience the culture of Chile. The classes offered were small enough to foster great student-teacher and student-student interactions which contributed enormously to the retention of language and vocabulary skills picked up in everyday life outside of the classroom. Also, UVM-Chile made [...]

Why Chile?

We invite you to a country blessed by nature and people, where art and literature have placed its name in the world with the work of Gabriela Mistral and Pablo Neruda, Roberto Matta’s and Claudio Bravo´s paintings, and with the contribution of its creators, scientists, engineers, architects and professionals in varied disciplines.

After celebrating our bicentennial as a nation in 2010, Chile stands as a modern country with its imposing and rugged geography from the Andes to the Pacific Ocean. Renowned for the beauty and diversity of its landscapes from the Atacama Desert to the Patagonia glaciers, for the warmth of its people, the seriousness and confidence that delivers its economic discipline in an atmosphere of great political and social stability that fosters business development and its integration into a global world. To know the greatness of its artists, poets and writers, their history and past links to the pre-Hispanic origins of America, opens the door to an active social and cultural life.

Chile is a essentially young country, where 65% of the population is under 40 years, therefore, it´s an attractive destination for Higer Education Studies and to learn Spanish and Latin American culture in a fun way.

Higher Education System

Higher Education in Chile combines a wide range of education offer with high academic levels in about 2,400 undergraduate programs that are offered nationwide, as well as graduate programs for Master and Doctoral Degrees in areas and specialties where the development achieved by our country provide a unique experience on the spot to its nearly 800,000 students at the national level.

Although Latin America is a relatively new continent in the world stage, the first chilean University, Santo Tomás de Aquino, was born in 1622. In 1728, the University of San Felipe is founded by King Philip V, after he granted a decree for the creation of a royal, cloister and teaching university. This institution is transformed in 1842, into the first public university of the Republic of Chile – actually the Universidad de Chile, which for decades, took custody of all the levels of education of the chilean education system.

The pioneering reform of the chilean university system occurs in 1967 – before May 1968 in Franc – when youth require a profound change in the system and the active participation of students. Plans and programs are changed and a flexible curriculum is introduced. Despite these reforms, until 1980, the chilean higher education was only composed of universities that received public funding, although some belonged to private organizations.

In 1981, the system undergoes a further structural reform and establishes the legal rules for the creation of autonomous private universities, without state funding. Three types of higher education institutions are defined: universities, professional institutes of higher education (IP) and technical training centers (CFT), a structure that remains till today.

Profitable country for professionals

Various indicators place Chile with promising figures that we recommend you to see:

95% of chilean professionals work in what they studied

The “highly relevant” or relation to the fields of study with the labor market; the “good level” of chileans in the Latin American context and “early binding” to employment through work experience, are the main reasons in which a study on the matter, attributed the positive indicator of a professional title in Chile vs the job performance area.

Indeed, the Proflex Study (Flexible Professionals) organized by the Alpha Project, a joint initiative of Latin American and European universities, throwed as a result in a survey applied to 8,000 students from Latin America, that about 95% of chilean professionals graduated between 2002 and 2003, are currently working in an area related to the skills associated with their degrees. In Chile, only 5% of the graduates is not working in what they studied. In Latin America, in average, the rate is 8%, while the figure in Spain and the rest of Europe is bordering 15%.
